I have visited several dentists in Nuremberg and Fürth, and I often hear completely different opinions about how my treatment should continue. However, they all seem to have one thing in common: they almost seem offended when you ask for your own X-rays or a copy of your treatment records. It's as if you're asking them for a million dollars.

At this particular practice, the receptionist asked me, "What do you need the X-rays for?" I replied, "That's my private business." She reluctantly went to look for them and then claimed there weren't any, even though we all know that dentists in Germany routinely take X-rays.

I was certain I had X-rays taken there, even though it was about four years ago, so I insisted they give them to me. She continued to insist they didn't exist. I then said, "Fine, then at least give me a copy of my treatment record.She printed it out but said she first had to ask the dentist for permission.

Ironically, that very document clearly showed that X-rays had in fact been taken.

She came back with the document wearing a forced, rather sour smile.

I've experienced the same attitude in almost every dental practice I've visited. Whenever you ask for your X-rays or your treatment records, they seem to look for ways to discourage you from getting them—especially if they assume you're a naïve foreigner.

Another thing I've noticed is that dentists rarely suggest different treatment options on their own. You have to ask about every possible alternative yourself.
