I booked an appointment specifically with Olga Bleckmann for a professional second opinion regarding root canal treatment based on an existing DVT scan.

Before the appointment, I sent the practice three emails explaining what I needed and asking them to download the DICOM files in advance. I explained that I was a self-paying patient seeking an endodontic second opinion.

I received no reply. When I arrived on May 7, the files had still not been downloaded. I was also not seen by Olga Bleckmann, with whom I had booked, but by another, younger dentist.

I explained again that I was not looking for a new general examination, but a second opinion based on my existing DVT. The files were eventually downloaded and a follow-up was scheduled for May 11.

Before leaving, I signed an agreement stating €159.10 for the DVT evaluation.

After the follow-up, I still did not receive the written interpretation I had originally requested. On May 18, the practice sent me images from the scan. I replied asking specifically for the written findings/diagnosis and treatment plan.

Instead, I was dealing with a bill for €478.78.

I repeatedly contacted the practice asking for the written opinion, an explanation of the bill and my records. On July 8, they apologized for the delay, explaining that staff shortages had prevented them from answering emails.

I finally received the written DVT report and treatment plan on July 15 - more than two months after the May 11 appointment.

After I disputed the €478.78 bill, it was replaced with another bill for €445.10. The practice and its billing company, PVS Reiss, defended the additional charges in writing.

On August 3, the practice sent what it described as its final statement and explicitly asked me to refrain from repeated further contact regarding the same issue.

I then asked the Berlin Dental Association (Zahnärztekammer Berlin) to independently review the bill.

On August 6, three days later, I received their assessment.

They concluded that the bill was not properly issued and identified problems with the original agreement. They found that the bill did not correspond to the documented course of treatment and noted that services charged on May 11 went beyond what I had commissioned on May 7, while my consent to those additional services was not documented in the patient record provided.

They also identified charges not supported by the documentation, a service that according to the documentation had not been performed, laboratory costs that were not billable, and increased fee multipliers that were not adequately justified.

One particularly striking finding: a €68.68 screening documented as taking approximately two minutes corresponded to an hourly rate of €1,940.40 - about five times the usual average, according to their calculation.

They also stated that they could not understand PVS Reiss's assessment of the invoice in light of their findings.

Interestingly, my concerns apparently sounded rather different when they came from an independent professional body: after the practice and billing company had stood behind a bill of €445.10, a new bill was issued for €209.88.

For me, the numbers are only part of the story. I sent three emails before arriving, the files were not prepared, I was not seen by the dentist I had booked with, and I spent more than two months chasing the written professional opinion I had originally gone there to obtain, while also disputing the billing.

Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this practice.
